More than Minigolf – a lesson in modern Entrepreneurship

by Ninelle Oster, Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany.

What does entrepreneurship really mean in today’s fast changing and competitive business world? When people hear the word entrepreneurship, they often think about global tech companies like Tesla. But entrepreneurship does not only take place on a big international stage. It can also be found in regional businesses – for example at the Adventure District in Bispingen. The Adventure District is a leisure and Entertainment centre, which offers visitors a wide range of leisure activities, including mini golf, laser tag, interactive movement games and much more.

During personal Interviews with the managing directors in 2026, I gained valuable insights into how entrepreneurial thinking shapes their daily decisions. What became clear is that entrepreneurship is not just about starting a business, It is about continuously developing it.

From Theory to Practice

In the IBAE Entrepreneurship module, we learned that entrepreneurship includes recognizing opportunities, developing innovative ideas, taking calculates risks and creating long-term value. It is both a mindset and a set of practical skills.

The Adventure District shows how these concepts work in reality. Located in the Lüneburger Heath, close to Hamburg and Hannover, the company operates in a competitive tourist region, which means that its is not enough to simply exist – you have to stand out.

One important trend the company recognized is the so-called “experience economy“. Today, customers do not only want a service or buy a product, they want emotions, memories and shared experiences with their favorite people. Families, friends and also companies are looking for activities they can enjoy, that bring them together and that they will remember fondly.

The Adventure District responds to this trend by combining different attractions under one roof, creating a diversified entertainment concept instead of focusing on only one single offer. This strategy makes it attractive for people of different age groups and can encourage visitors to stay longer and return again.

This broad offering creates a strong value proposition by targeting families, friend groups, school classes, companies and more, which increases financial stability and reduces dependency on a single group of costumers. By combining entertainment with gastronomy and events, the company strengthens its value chain and increases revenue per visitor. This customer-oriented strategy helps the Adventure District to remain competitive in the market.

Innovation at the Adventure District does not mean inventing new technology, rather it means to continuously improve existing concepts. By integrating multiple activities and regularly adapting its offers, the company creates cross-selling opportunities and encourages repeat visits. At the same time, this diversity is harder to manage and requires more employees, which leads to higher costs.

At the same time, entrepreneurship always includes risk. High fixed costs and unexpected negative influences on profit require careful and well thought management, especially during crises like the corona pandemic.

The Adventure District in Bispingen shows that entrepreneurship is not only about company site, but about mindset and continuously development. Through opportunity recognition, diversification, innovation and long-term investment the company demonstrates how strategic thinking creates sustainable value.

Ultimately, this case illustrates that entrepreneurial success is built on adaptability, long-term vision and responsibility, proving how entrepreneurial principles can be found in a regional family business.
